Dear Michael Jackson,

It's still hard to believe you're no longer with us. I feel you were taken far too soon, but at the same time I can't imagine you growing old. It's complicated. How do I put this? Impossible as it is, it seemed like you would live forever. I know I sound crazy.

Finding out that you had passed away was a real 'where were you when...?' kind of moment. I was on the train, it was around a quarter to 9. The lady sitting behind me was on the phone and I was eavesdropping. "Did you hear about Michael Jackson?" she said. "Sad, isn't it?" I instantly became curious and took my BlackBerry out of my bag. There was an SMS waiting in my inbox from my mom. "Is it true that Michael Jackson is gone?" My eyes widened and my shoulders tensed, the way they do when I get startled. I entered your name into Google and as it loaded, I hoped and hoped and hoped that it was just a terrible hoax...but no. The first result was a news article confirming your death. Reading this paragraph back to myself, I find it quite amusing how technology has changed the way we receive news. The news article was published just 30 minutes before I read it. It was eerie to find out about your passing just an hour or so after it actually happened. It makes me wonder when and how I would have found out if I hadn't overheard that conversation, received that text or read that online article.

Back on topic, the impact you had on the music world is extraordinary. There really is no one like you! It's sad that your death had to be the one thing that reminded us of your musical greatness. Countless radio stations, tv shows, shops are playing your music now and while that's great, we should have been listening to your music everyday! I'm watching your live performances and seriously, no one sounds like you, no one moves like you, no one makes people emotional the way you did. So many fans cried, screamed their lungs out and fainted at your concerts, even if you were just standing there doing nothing. Hahaha. And your wonderful songs and music videos... I'll never forget watching them on rage on Saturday mornings. I was amazed at how you turned into sand in 'Remember The Time' and I enjoyed Macaulay Culkin's cameo in 'Black or White' (I think I had a tiiiny crush on him back then, hahaha). And when I think about the film Free Willy, 'Will You Be There' and 'Human Nature' come to mind. (Yeah, both. I guess it's kind of a remix in my head. :P ) The only video I didn't really like was 'Thriller'. The end scared the shit out of me. One day, my dad came home with the HIStory laserdisc and I couldn't even look at the back of the case because it had a still of you and your scary eyes on it. :P

I hope you forgive me for spreading one of those stupid playground jokes about you back in primary school. The one that went 'What did Michael Jackson sing to his credit card? You are not alone, I am plastic too...' And, uh, forgive me for snickering while thinking about it just then. The way you handled the taunts and accusations in your life was extraordinary, too. I'm the kind of person who'll burst into tears at the slightest insult.. while every day you were ridiculed, called extremely hurtful names and were accused of despicable acts. But you never let them get the best of you- you brushed off the names, you maintained your innocence and kept on living each day you had. You were an obviously vulnerable person, an easy target, but they showed no mercy- they just kept on beating you into the ground. How unfortunate that they chose to ignore your charitable deeds and instead did what they could to convince people you were a monster. As your brother Marlon said in your memorial service today, "maybe now, Michael, they will leave you alone."

I have the pleasure of being able to say that we were once in the same vicinity... when I was a foetus. HAHAHA. My mother told me that you were here in Sydney, in November 1987. Back then, she was living with her parents and siblings. They (my mom, my aunties and uncles) found out you were performing at Parramatta Stadium, so they ran there all the way from their home in Harris Park. They didn't have tickets but they were happy enough to stay outside, as long as they could hear you. November 1987 was about four months before I was born, so I was still in the oven, so to speak. Even though I wasn't really counted as a part of the world yet, I was alive. I know I'm reaching and it sounds kind of pathetic, but I just get a kick out of knowing we were once in the same place.

I doubt there will ever be an entertainer as amazing as you were. You really are the greatest that ever lived. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that you're not coming back.. I hope you're in Heaven and that you can see just how many people are devastated by your passing. Sorry that it took your death for us to show the love and appreciation you deserved while you were alive.

Thanks for the memories.

Rest In Peace.

Logies 2009

I am seriously puzzled by some of these nominations. Mark Loves Sharon? Matt Lee? As much as I like Adam Hills...a Gold Logie? What?

And urgh.... Gretel Killeen and her Spock haircut. Please don't host anything ever again. Feeling second hand embarrassment over here. Seriously.

Okay, so I'm listening to The Getaway Plan's album Other Voices, Other Rooms and I think "hey this is really good! I'll go look up some stuff about them" and I find out that they broke up about a month ago. WTF. WTF.

Hoorayyyyy

I finally got my BlackBerry Bold on Monday. Since it arrived about two weeks later than promised, the Voda guy gave me a 4GB micro SD :) I bought a skin for it yesterday from a new stall in Parramatta called Gizmobies. Godddd I love personalising things.

My birthday was good... I received two Thomas Sabo bracelets! Problem is, they're so lovely that I can never decide which one I should wear, and I end up wearing both. Thus creating jangly noisy wrists on tables while writing. Gorgeous jangly noisy wrists anyway.

My parents snuck into my room in the early hours of my birthday, left 50 pink balloons on my ceiling and taped '21' decorations on my door. (I still haven't taken them down.. I really love birthdays. lol.)

Plus, the lovely Katrina sent me a dozen birthday cupcakes. LOVE HER.

I'm celebrating my 21st year quietly. I'm just going to have lunch with my closest friends. When I think about it, I don't have that many close friends. I mean, I do love the ones I have, but why am I such a social retard? As I snoop through the online albums of teenage friends and family members, I'm seeing these amazing social lives, the kind I could have only wished for when I was that age- heck, even now. I hate that I was (and am) so socially inept. I hate looking back and thinking about how I used to look and what I used to wear back in high school, so much that I feel like throwing up. I hate that I had no one to tell me, "hey! WTF are you doing?" just when I was about to make a mistake. And I hate that I'm getting so god damn worked up about this. Way to end a post.

I worked both days this weekend. In my 2 and a bit years of employment, customers have rarely been able to guess my background. Top 5 incorrect guesses-
  1. Chinese- an elderly couple came up to me yesterday and started speaking to me in Chinese. I kindly told them that I (unfortunately) only speak English. They stopped, smiled and nodded....and then continued speaking Chinese.
  2. Vietnamese
  3. Canadian
  4. Turkish
  5. Hawaiian
I served a customer that looked like Michael C. Hall yesterday. I would have gone weak at the knees had it not been a woman. It was so awkward. As I was completing the transaction, all I could think was 'Dexter Morgan. Dexter Morgan. Dexter Morgan.'

I finally got my staff card yesterday. The photo printed on it is the picture I submitted on a floppy disk (!!!) when I started working, back in 2006. IT. IS. FOUL. I didn't have a fringe back then, and my stupid fat face was pimply and oily. Urrrrrrrrrrgh.

I don't have a BlackBerry Bold..yet. Apparently none of the Vodafone stores have stock and the expected deliveries haven't arrived yet. I guess it's not Vodafone's fault, but I just hope my new phone arrives before my birthday. :(

Rove's finally finished and Dexter's about to start.. I'm surprised my TV didn't explode from Zac Efron and Russell Brand being on it at the same time. And hey, when did Myf Warhurst become so unsexy? And when did Evermore stop looking so nerdy?

JSYK

Chuck Bass was in my dream last night. Ohhh yeeeah.

Monday, March 9, 2009

I'll be saying goodbye to my sidekick3 soon. The device has this annoying habit of delivering SMSes several days late, the internet is slow, the camera is shitty and its battery life sucks. The plan finishes in August, but I'm just going to pay an early exit fee- I really need a new phone. Yesterday my mom placed a special order with Vodafone for my new Blackberry Bold :D :D :D I can't wait! The guy said that it would be in either tomorrow or Wednesday. I may explode.

Bella's christening was held on Saturday. She cried just about every time I carried her. It seems she really doesn't want to be my friend when we're around other people.. but once we're in a smaller crowd, she doesn't mind me. It's kinda like she just wants to be secret friends. lol. Anyways, Mike was invited too and he came along. I really like having Mike around. He's my best friend and I wish I could see him aaaall the time. I love him. What I didn't love was the giftwrap that his present for Bella was wrapped in. It had heaps of glitter that kept coming off and getting stuck to the fingers and palms of whoever touched it. My uncle sprinkled it above my head and I ended up with glitter in my hair, on my arms and hands. I exfoliated like a crazy person in the shower that night. The buffet lunch was damn gooood, as I expected. I don't think I could ever get sick of eating roast beef and potatoes. And chocolate mousse for dessert. Mmmmmm.

I really don't get that new McDonald's ad where one boy dobs on his brother, who is pulling tissue after tissue out of the box. The mother turns around and doesn't seem to mind the little wank wasting Kleenexes. Am I missing something? But I do like those new Doritos ads with that Greater Union guy, 'Glen Parks'.

Life without facebook was getting easier... up until Saturday night. I really want to upload photos from the christening and tag every single person in them. Oh well... 27 days.

Thursday, February 26, 2009

I've given up facebook for Lent.

Ohhh man, what have I done?! For a little less than forty days (I'm starting a bit late) I will not let myself log on, check anyone's status, look at their uploaded photos or learn 25 interesting facts about them. I have turned off email notifications too, so I won't be able to cheat. I just know this is going to be so difficult- I'm used to checking facebook several times a day.

And Lent hasn't come at a worse time either- it doesn't end until the 5th of April, which means that I won't be able to upload anything from or about my goddaughter Isabella's christening or my 21st birthday. Booooo. But I'm determined to just do this because heck- Jesus walked in the desert and fasted for forty days and nights.. and with all the sins I've committed, it's the least I can do to make it up to him and show him I'm grateful for the sacrifices he made.

...PS- Going without food for forty days is amazing. Seriously, my stomach whines after forty SECONDS. Jesus is legendary.

Things from my childhood

Thanks to the rain, the garage was flooded yesterday and move boxes of stuff into the house. We found about ten boxes of toys and realised we need to either give them away or throw them out. Here are some of my oldest, most loved belongings.

Minnie Mouse puppet: This is an actual Disney branded toy but it doesn't look very accurate. lol.

Polly Pocket Tropical Adventure Hut Book thingy: Remember when Polly Pockets were reeeeally small?

Polly Pocket Picnic wrist band: The plastic band was annoying and really clung to your skin. So much that when you'd take it off (more like peel it off), it'd make a sssshhhh sound.

Scooby Doo 'recorder': This was from Wonderland. *wipes tear*

Fish watch: I got this badass watch from Duty Free before I went to The Philippines when I was like, 4. It's filled with water and the fish moved around. Kept me amused for hours.

Playskool torch: I hated being in the dark as a kid... and hm, I actually still hate the dark now. That red button underneath had a sort of nightlight function, and as long as you were still holding onto it, the light would work. Once you let go (i.e. fell asleep), the light would dim and eventually turn off.

Darkwing Duck's buddy: I forgot what his name was. I just remember Darkwing. And Gosling.

"Merman! Merman!" : This little thing was part of The Little Mermaid "Babysitter Ariel" set.

Tickle Me Elmo: Sucks to be you if you didn't have one of these in the '90s.

Sky Dancer launcher: I lost the actual Sky Dancer doll. :( Must have flown over someone's fence. lol.

Macquarie Centre Bear: To be honest, I have no recollection of ever going to Macquarie Centre as a child.

The Macarena Gorilla: This was fun. Clap your hands and you'd set him off. If you haven't figured it out by now, he'd bounce and sing the Macarena.

My puppy: His name was Ben. The way he's all dirty and ruined makes him look like Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler. No, I don't care if you disagree.

My first teddy bear: That triangular patch of white still weirds me out.

My first lunchbox: Having the alphabet on the back was so convenient. While I was being a loser kindergartener at lunch, I could practise :P

Hello Kitty & Minnie headbands: The oldest headbands I own, still in good condition.

Sailor Moon outfit: No idea where the doll is :(

Sailor Moon wand and locket: Wand from my parents, locket from my uncle. I remember when I got the locket. I was in Toys R Us with my uncle and his girlfriend (now his wife/my aunty) and he said he'd buy me something that was under $30. I saw the $29.95 locket, he said it didn't count and we argued for about ten minutes. I won.

C is for..

RULES: It's harder than it looks! Copy to your own note, erase my answers, enter yours, and tag 10 people. Use the first letter of your name to answer each of the following questions. They have to be real.. nothing made up! If the person before you had the same first initial, you must use different answers. Candlestick Maker (lol)

Just a random thought..

If I love singing so much, then why don't I have a karaoke machine in my house?

If anyone knows where to get a good one, let me know. Preferably one I wont need to buy a bajillion chips or discs for. :/

It's Australia Day today. It's almost 4:15pm and I've stayed home all day. All I've done is eat and go online. I logged onto YouTube and had myself a nice nostalgic 90s (alliteration, woo!) marathon. I watched an episode of Family Matters (the one where Steve Urkel turns into Stefan Urquelle) and various clips of Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, Dinosaurs and Rugrats. *sigh* Those were the days. I also watched some early 2000 music videos. I watched some good ol' N*SYNC clips and was horrified at what I could remember. The lyrics, the dancemoves (not that I ever tried.. good God, no), how Justin lands on the ground in Bye Bye Bye and he looks up and goes 'heh heh'.. and LOL at Justin's stupid hair. I wonder if he ever watches those videos, cringing at how he used to look and sound. I remember (back in the days when I used to type my MSN display names ~*like this*~) Lance was my favourite. I'm still feeling second-hand embarrassment for On The Line..what a flop.

I'm gonna go watch that Party Posse episode of The Simpsons... word.

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

I woke up at 3 this morning to watch the inauguration of Barack Obama live. Even though I'm not an American, I dunno.. it was still so exciting. Watching Barack give a speech is awesome.. and I loved Aretha's hat, lol. Her voice, not so much. She must've had a cold.

In other news, I'm going to be a godmother! To my little cousin Isabella. I suspect my uncle and aunt were running out of possible godparents, since they've already baptised two daughters :P But whatever- they've still chosen me over someone else, so it's great. Now... what to wear to the christening? Hooray, a valid reason to shop!

I recently bought a Casio Baby-G because lately I've been quite sick of having to whip out my phone or ask other people for the time. I'm pretty sure the last time I wore a Baby-G was in sixth grade, about ten years ago. (!!!) I remember that watch. I loved it. My parents bought it for me one night when we were browsing the shops around Sydney Harbour. It was light blue, with a cloth wriststrap and it was from the 'Witchy' collection. It was the maddest watch ever. It had a daily horoscope function to tell you what kind of day you'd have, and the result would be a picture of an animal. A turtle would be a slow day. A crab would indicate a very good day. Another mode would have you ask a question, and it would answer either yes or no. Kind of like a magic 8 ball. It would be fun to own that watch again, but I'm turning 21 this year and it calls for a more mature timepiece. So I chose one from the Sweet Poison collection. I chose this one, the one with the white face. I think it's gorgeous. The smooth white resin wristband makes it stylish, but it's digital so it still has a slight casual feel. The 200M water resistant claim is quite impressive, too.

I saw Slumdog Millionaire and it was amazing. This film deserves every single award and nomination it gets. I really want to see Role Models. I watched Zack and Miri (I refuse to call it by its full title) and that was pretty funny and better than I expected. Bolt was also surprisingly good.

BRB, gonna watch the latest episodes of How I Met Your Mother and Gossip Girl :D
